Food

I have always loved food, especially anything related to sweet things from cakes, gateaux, puddings, ice-creams to chocolate which I blame entirely on my German upbringing. During my childhood, afternoon cakes and coffee were as much an institution in Germany as a 'Five o'clock tea' in Britain. Over the summer my grandmother would bake wonderful tarts and gateaux with the fruit harvested from the garden - strawberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, sweet gooseberries, juicy cherries and plums. Over the winter we would bake biscuits, nutty or chocolaty cakes and so many other things. The month before  Christmas, Advent as it is called in Germany, is a particularly pleasurable time when it comes to baking - the kitchen filled with the warm aromas of cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and allspice to name but a few spices to make Stollen, Lebkuchen or Spekulatius biscuits.

I started teaching myself how to cook after leaving home and living in Britain. A friend of mine gave me Marguerite Patton's Perfect Cooking as a birthday present and that become the starting point to my cooking journey.  Long before the internet, TV  provided me with a never-ending source of tips and information, in particular The Food Programme and any of Keith Floyd's programmes and books and Ready, Steady, Cook. However, I like picking up new ideas whenever I can whether it's in a workshop or a talk - and I always keep on discovering different ways of doing things. I guess my cooking can be defined as a home-cooking style that is easily accessible - cooking is for pure fun and pleasure. Needless to say that I am influenced by German cooking which has lots of lovely recipes, and not all involve sausages, but I do enjoy British, Mediterranean, Indian and North American cooking. I also love eating out and enjoy having someone else cook a special meal.

As this is a new section it will take a wee while to put all my published recipes including photos onto the website.  I hope you enjoy them.
