Hello, I'm Beate!

I am a surface designer based in beautiful Aberdeenshire, Scotland. I describe my style as history-inspired, hand-drawn, joyful, uplifting and playful. I have always loved decorative surfaces, in particular notebooks, paper products as well as fabrics and it is a joy to now to be able to create these.

Most of my designs start out as pencil drawings and inked line art which are then vectorised in Illustrator. In addition, I also like creating art brushes and draw with these directly in Illustrator. Recently I started exploring hand lettering more and that skill is currently evolving.

I have always been interested in history, especially social history, exploring how people lived, how they dressed and decorated their homes whether that is in ancient Egypt or in the Roaring 20's. Many a math lesson at school was spent doodling historical costumes. My degree in Social History and Languages from the University of East Anglia allowed me to further delve into the lives of the past and I was particularly drawn to the medieval period. I love visiting ancient sites, historic houses or attend talks on the subject.

Inspiration is never far where I live; surrounded by gorgeous rolling countryside, mountains, castles and beaches I regularly explore these by walking whatever the season. Aberdeenshire is steeped in history with over 260 castles, stately homes and ruins and I love that sense of connection to the people of the past especially when visiting castles that still have their amazing interior décor intact. Of course, most of these castles have beautiful gardens too.
